Anniversary of Indonesian Republic independence on August 17 this year to coincided with Ramadhan 1431. Precisely on Tuesday, August 17, 2010 all Muslims in Indonesian runs into the seventh fasting day.

So what's different this year? This year was a bit special, month of fasting the day before the anniversary in conjunction with Indonesian Republic Independence. These moment become a wetlands to reap benefits for spontaneous emergence merchants. There are sellers' flags and banners. There is also a seller of food and beverages before Ramadhan (buka puasa), such as compote, coconut ice, and etc. The merchants are very easy to find a surprise at the edges of the road.

There are distinctive from the Indonesian Republic Independence, as a sense of gratitude and remember the heroes of the struggle of organized various competitions 17an typical in almost all villages in Yogyakarta. The August, 17 competitions such as pinang climbing, a carnival, a fun bike, and etc. But few the competitions had omitted for reasons a fasting.

Most people in Yogyakarta are still holding strong tradition that is performed until now tirakatan. Tirakatan is a thanks giving ceremony performed by the group of people who made the night before August 17. One package of rice cone is presented in the middle of the crowd the community to eat together. Tirakatan usually accompanied by artistic entertainments like jatilan, and etc.

 But according to the Mayor of Yogyakarta, Herry Zudianto, beginning August 17 this year, every night before going to be confirmed as the Night Charge Determination of Independence and not the night tirakatan. According to him, this time the task of nation and people of Indonesia is the independence and not just contemplate and remember the struggle for independence.

Herry added, as a form to fill it then on the eve of independence anniversary every August 17 should instead be filled with presentations about the achievements of each area of development that have been done last year. (Caecilia Novi)
