MASJID GEDE KAUMAN, Javanese Architectural MosqueCategory : HeritageAt Yogyakarta, you can find a lot of mosque, one of them is Masjid Gede Kauman (Kauman Gede Mosque). This mosque was located on west of Alun-Alun Utara and restorated for several times since the first built in 1773.
This mosque was built during the Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono I by an architect named K. Wiryokusumo. But unlike other mosques, this mosque has a building called pagongan, which is usually used as a place to put the gamelan at the time of sekaten. Sekaten is a ceremony to commemorate a date of birth Nabi Muhammad SAW.
At the first sight, this mosque look same with other mosque, but this mosque is very old. All of the mosque area is surrounded by high concrete wall. In the north there is building called Dalem Pengulon. This place used as an office and residence of the 'abdi dalem pengulu'. 'Pengulu' courtiers is in charge of the servants of other religious field.
Entering the Masjid Gede Kauman area, the visitors will stop first on the porch or veranda of the mosque. In this place, you will see the majesty of the architecture as seen from the carve-carvings, and a ceiling that high artistic value. Before 1936 the floor made from stones, but after that they change the floor used floral marble.
The main room is used as a place of prayer looks simple. In this place you can see 36 pillars made of teak wood. The pillars are left plain without any ornamentation, which means that when the human face of God all human beings should be holy and leave all their social status.
Until now, Kauman mosque is still used as places that support religious activities. Especially during the month of Ramadan this mosque will look more crowded than usual days.
