Some pedicabs are parking in front of the inn. Some foreigner are speaking in their own language, most English; the other are walking on the alley. At the end of the alley, I found someone who sells fried tempe, local food made from soya nuts. It smells good! I'm on Prawirotaman Kampong now, a tourist kampong in Jogjakarta.
Walking on Prawirotaman, just like walking on ancient kampong. Some houses have a pendopo style on their structure, made from teak wood. The other built it in strong walls with burnt roof tile above, a building style in early 50 - 60's. You can see daily live of the local people here. Local people usually use the alley surrounding Prawirotaman as shortcut. If you see the house, a little bit different between home and hotel, because they have similar details and facade, as small yard, guest room, bar, receptionist and living rooms. The only different between them is a sign wrote 'kamar masih ada', it means 'rooms available'.
The Prawirotaman Kampong was founded in 19 century by Prawirotomos in a land which given from Sultan of Jogjakarta. In the 60's, the Prawirotaman kampong were a center of the batik ink stamp in Jogjakarta. The decreasing of batik ink stamp in the early 70's forced The Prawirotomos turn their business into motel and inns. They turned their batik ink stamp fabric into hotels and inns. Some new function fixed into the building, as guest room, dining room, living room, bath room and storage. Until now, 3 Prawirotomos families run the business; they are Werdoyoprawiro, Suroprawiro dan Mangunprawiro (you can see the similar 'prawiro').
As Sosrowijayan Kampong at north Malioboro Street, Prawiromatan also has completely tourist infrastructure. If you want to shop fresh vegetables and meats, there is a traditional market in the middle of the kampong, it is named Prawirotaman Market. Vendors, Bars, shops and restaurants are easily found, some of them 24 hours daily open. If you want to trip to the hinterland of Jogjakarta, you may rent bike, motorcycle or cars where the rent shop located in Prawirotaman too. Looking for some gifts from Jogjakarta? Don't worry there are lots merchandise and souvenir shops open for tourists in work hour (8am-9pm).
