Carrying the slogan: Local Wisdom Inspiring Global Solution, the International World Conference on Science, Education and Culture (WISDOM) 2010 that was postponed from its November date due to Mt. Merapi's recent eruption, will be now be held in Yogyakarta from the 5th to the 8th. December, a step towards the World Cultural Forum which is to be convened in Bali in 2012.
A highlight of the Conference is a Colloquium in Honour of Dr. Ann Dunham Soetoro, anthropologist, mother of US President Obama, - who had studied blacksmithing in Yogyakarta and raised gender issues - and the late Prof. Dr.Mubyarto, fighter for community - based economy.
During his recent visit to Indonesia, President Barack Obama said in acknowledgement of Indonesia's highest civilian honour (Bintang Jasa Utama) awarded to his mother, Dr. Ann Dunham Soetoro by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono:
"By the fact, Mr. President, that you chose to recognize my mother in this way speaks to the bonds that she forged over many years with the people of this magnificent country.
And in honouring her, you honor the spirit that led her to travel into villages throughout the country... She believed that we all share common aspirations - to live in dignity and security, to get an education, to provide for our families, to give our children a better future, and to leave the world better than we found it."
Keynote speaker will be the Founder and President of Ocean Futures Society, Jean-Michael Cousteau, an explorer, environmentalist, educator, film producer and the Executive Vice President of The Cousteau Society for nearly 20 years. WISDOM 2010, will be officially opened by President Soesilo Bambang Yudhoyono (waiting confirmation), and is expected to draw 750 participants from 15 countries.
Subthemes to be discussed include the topics : Managing Multiculturalism: Complexities and Contradictions; Education in a Global World; Managing the Environment; Technology and Social Cultural Change; Heritage Tourism and the Creative Economy; and Local Knowledge, Global Health.
As an addition to WISDOM 2010 there will also be a Post-Merapi Eruption Social Program to allow delegates to visit villages that were badly damaged by the recent Mt Merapi volcanic eruption, and also to visit the shelters for evacuees. The goal is to help delegates understand the 'Spirit of Merapi' and its roots in local wisdom that has existed among local villages for centuries. The visit will also help demonstrate to participants how local wisdom acts as a natural resource to guard Merapi and its residents.
Among the list of distinguished Indonesian speakers are: Prof. Dr. Sri Edi Swasono, Prof. Dr. Azyumardi Azra, Prof. Dr. Franz Magnis-Suseno, Prof. dr. Arief Rachman, M.Pd., Dr. Ninok Laksono, Dr. Charles Saerang, Garin Nugroho, Dwiki Dharmawan, and Carmanita. While academic figures also attending include Prof. Michael Hitchock, Ph.D. (UK), Prof. Dr. Datuk Mohd. Dalimin Noh (Malaysia), Dr. Nancy Cooper (USA), and Prof. Kaoru Takara (Japan).
The event will take place at a number of venues around Yogyakarta, these are at the Ullen Sentalu Museum in Kaliurang, the Prambanan temple Complex, the Batik Winotosastro, the Museum of Indonesia's modern painter, Affandi, and at the Great Hall or Balairung of the University of Gajah Mada.
