Labuhan ceremony is held to celebrate the birth of Sri Sultan Hamengku
Buwono (The King of Yogyakarta). By performing this ceremony, the King
and the people of Yogyakarta hope to stay healthy.
Labuhan Ceremony among the other festivals is a very important festival. These
events are celebrated at Mt.Merapi and the South Sea.
Labuhan Parangkusumo The word Labuh means to throw something into a river or sea. As such
offerings from the Sultan include food, hair and nail clippings and so
on are thrown into the South Sea at Parangkusumo Beach in honour of
Kanjeng Ratu Kidul (Goddess of the South Sea). Labuhan Alit Merapi The ritual is a tribute to Prince Sapujagat, ruler of Mount Merapi. The
procession starts from the hamlet of Kinahrejo at 6:30 am, at Mbah
Marijan's home, and traveled up and misty approximately two hours
towards Bangsal Sri Maganti (vegetation boundery) the location of
labuhan procession.
